Gingerbread Syrup Recipe



(Yields 2 cups)

  • 236ml water
  • 225g sugar 
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract 
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp allspice

For many, the beginning of December usually coincides with a sudden craving for wintry flavours. Whether it's peppermint, cinnamon, ginger or clove, just a dash of flavouring is enough to stir memories of the holidays. Adding any of these nostalgic flavours to your favourite drink or dish is as simple as making syrup. In fact, syrups are surprisingly easy to make at home and are a fraction of the cost of store brand versions!

The sweet, spicy notes in gingerbread make for a great addition to your coffee, apple cider, hot chocolate and even desserts. A drizzle of this syrup over ice cream or even pancakes is also delicious! 


  1. Bring all of your ingredients to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.
  2. Let simmer for about 20 minutes, then remove from heat.
  3. As the syrup cools, it will thicken. Once it is cool, you can jar it or put in an easy-pour bottle. No need to refrigerate it, but you can if you like.

This syrup is a great gift item and the perfect way to give a personal gift from your kitchen! Experiment with other syrup flavours, too. Starting with this same water and sugar base, you can add fruit, caramel, mint and other flavours to create other tasty syrups!
